Challenges and Calls for Renovation
In recent years, Azadi Stadium has faced increasing scrutiny for its aging infrastructure. The AFC’s negative “A” grade highlighted several issues with the stadium, particularly regarding safety, comfort, and modern facilities. These shortcomings have raised concerns about the stadium’s ability to continue hosting international events, prompting discussions about the need for renovations and modernization.
One of the primary challenges facing Azadi Stadium is the lack of adequate facilities for spectators. Although the stadium can hold over 78,000 people, the seating arrangement is outdated, and the amenities, such as restrooms and food concessions, are limited compared to modern international stadiums. Additionally, access to the stadium via public transportation remains a challenge, with traffic congestion around the venue being a common complaint among fans.
The stadium has also faced criticism for its lack of provisions for female spectators. For many years, women were not allowed to attend football matches at Azadi Stadium, a policy that drew widespread criticism both within Iran and internationally. Although this ban has been relaxed in recent years, with women allowed to attend select matches, the issue remains a point of contention, particularly among human rights activists.
