Jinous Nemat Mahmoudi: A Life of Achievement and Tragedy
Jinous Nemat Mahmoudi, Hoshang Mahmoudi’s wife, was a notable figure in her own right. She was instrumental in establishing the field of meteorology in Iran and was a respected academic and government official.
Early Life and Education
Jinous was born in 1929 (1308 in the Persian calendar) to a family committed to education and service. Her father, Janab Nemat, was a pioneer in Iranian agriculture, and her mother, Kamalieh Ezachi, was a teacher at a girls’ school. This background inspired Jinous to pursue higher education. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics and later completed a master’s degree in meteorology, a field in which she would leave a lasting impact.
Contributions to Meteorology and Iranian Academia
Before the establishment of Iran’s Meteorological Organization, Jinous Nemat Mahmoudi led the country’s meteorological atmospheric research and teaching efforts. After founding the Meteorological High School, she served as its director, training a new generation of Iranian meteorologists. Her expertise in marine meteorology earned her recognition from Iranian government officials, making her the first Iranian woman to lead the Meteorological Organization of Iran.
