Takhti’s association with the National Front and his open criticism of the Pahlavi regime made him a target for SAVAK, which identified him as a “dissatisfied person.” As a result, he faced systematic exclusion from the sports establishment. Authorities obstructed his training opportunities and restricted his participation in international competitions, undermining his career. Despite these challenges, Takhti’s commitment to his political ideals remained steadfast. In 1963, he was elected to the interim Executive Board of the National Front following the arrest of its leaders.
In one of his most defiant acts, Takhti attended the funeral of Mohammad Mossadegh on March 4, 1966, despite explicit warnings and threats from military and security officials. When confronted, Takhti fearlessly replied, “Arrest me,” underscoring his unwavering dedication to the cause.
Social Activities
In addition to his political endeavors, Gholamreza Takhti was deeply committed to social causes. On September 1, 1962, a devastating earthquake struck Buin-Zahra, a region in the Qazvin plain, registering 7.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake claimed approximately 20,000 lives and left thousands of families homeless. Moved by the tragedy, Takhti took it upon himself to lead relief efforts for the victims.
At the suggestion of Kayhan Sports and Kayhan Newspaper, Takhti spearheaded a public fundraising campaign. Carrying a donation box around his neck, he walked from Saei Park on Pahlavi Street to Kayhan Hall on Ferdowsi Street, appealing directly to the public through a loudspeaker. His impassioned plea inspired an outpouring of generosity. Women contributed earrings, necklaces, and rings, while men offered monetary donations. Takhti’s efforts galvanized a wave of charitable activity, resulting in dozens of truckloads of supplies being entrusted to him for distribution among the earthquake survivors.
Takhti’s humanitarian actions further cemented his reputation as a national hero who embodied the values of compassion and solidarity. His ability to rally people from all walks of life to support a common cause demonstrated the profound connection he shared with his fellow Iranians.
