Commemoration of Reza Babak at the opening of the Fajr Festival

Evolution and Developments

A significant structural change occurred in 2014 when the festival’s international section was separated from the national section. The international segment was held independently for the first time in May 2015 under the direction of Reza Dad. However, in 2022, the festival reverted to its original format, bringing the national and international sections together again. This decision was intended to enhance the festival’s global reach while maintaining its strong local identity.

Influence on Iranian and Global Cinema

The Fajr Film Festival has played a crucial role in promoting Iranian cinema on the global stage. Many Iranian films that gained recognition at Fajr have later found success at international film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. The festival serves as a platform for both established filmmakers and emerging talents, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their work and gain critical acclaim.

The festival has also been instrumental in reflecting the evolving themes and narratives in Iranian cinema. While early editions of the festival primarily focused on revolutionary and war-related themes, later editions have embraced a broader range of topics, including social issues, family dynamics, and personal struggles. This shift has allowed Iranian cinema to gain a more diverse and nuanced international reputation.
