Challenges and Political Struggles

Sara’s journey, however, has not been devoid of challenges, particularly due to political and social constraints. In January 2019, she withdrew from the Iranian national team. Though the official reason for her withdrawal was not explicitly stated, many speculated that it was connected to the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane by Iranian forces, a tragedy that sparked nationwide controversy. Her passport was confiscated at the airport, making it impossible for her to travel freely. However, she rejoined the national team a few months later.

One of the most defining moments of her career came in December 2022 during the World Rapid Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Sara participated in the event without wearing the mandatory hijab, defying Iranian regulations. Her act of silent protest resonated across the globe, especially amid widespread demonstrations against the Iranian regime following the death of Mahsa Amini. The Spanish newspaper El País later reported that Sara had decided not to return to Iran, fearing potential arrest upon her arrival. Her concerns were not unfounded, as reports indicated that Iranian authorities had already prepared legal documents for her detention.
