An Alternative Method to Dubbing: Rythmo Band

Dubbing is an essential process in the global entertainment industry, allowing films, television shows, and other audiovisual content to be accessible to a wider audience. While the standard method of dubbing relies on automated dialogue replacement (ADR), another alternative technique known as “rythmo band” (or “lip-sync band”) has historically been used, particularly in Canada and France. This method provides a precise guide for actors, directors, and technicians, helping to ensure seamless synchronization between dubbed audio and on-screen visuals.

What is Rythmo Band?

The rythmo band method involves the use of a clear 35 mm film leader, on which dialogue and additional indications—such as laughs, cries, syllable lengths, mouth sounds, breaths, and mouth movements—are hand-written in India ink. The band is projected in the studio and scrolls in perfect synchronization with the picture, allowing actors to see the text they need to perform in real-time. This technique streamlines the recording process, making it easier for voice actors to maintain proper timing and lip-sync with the original footage.
