Later Controversies and Allegations

In October 2012, Nayyari made headlines by sending a letter to the Jomhuri Eslami newspaper, denying that his former mentor, Mohammadi Gilani, had sentenced his own son, Kazem Mohammadi Gilani—a member of the MEK—to death. The incident had become symbolic of the era’s ideological ruthlessness, and Nayyari’s denial was seen as an attempt to reshape the historical narrative.

Another controversy emerged in April 2018 when the famous Iranian singer Hassan Shamaizadeh accused Nayyari of confiscating his house in Tehran’s affluent Niavaran neighborhood. Shamaizadeh alleged that Nayyari had used forged documents to take over and then sell the property on the housing market. The accusation reignited public resentment over post-revolution asset seizures and the abuse of judicial authority for personal gain.

Though no legal proceedings followed the accusation, the incident added to the growing list of grievances against Nayyari, who, by then, was a symbol of the Islamic Republic’s revolutionary judiciary and its excesses.

Legacy and Death

Hossein Ali Nayyari died on 14 Farvardin 1404 (early April 2025), leaving behind a legacy steeped in controversy, ideology, and judicial power. His career was one of unwavering commitment to the principles of the Islamic Republic, even as those principles led to widespread suffering and human rights violations.

To his supporters within the regime, Nayyari represented steadfastness, integrity, and a devotion to revolutionary justice. To his critics, both inside and outside Iran, he was a symbol of clerical authoritarianism, a man whose hands were stained with the blood of thousands of political prisoners.

Human rights advocates continue to call for accountability for those responsible for the 1988 massacres. As of his death, Hossein Ali Nayyari had never faced trial or investigation for his role in what many historians and legal experts consider a crime against humanity.
