Pioneer of Independent Cinema in Iran
Upon returning to Iran in the late 1960s, Arjomand became one of the founders of the Mashhad Free Cinema movement, alongside Mehrdad Tadayin. This grassroots movement aimed to provide an alternative to the mainstream Iranian cinema of the time. It promoted artistic freedom and encouraged experimental filmmaking. Arjomand was actively involved in Mashhad Theater and began making 8mm short films. One of his notable early works was the short film “Hiss.”
His directorial debut came through the film “He Said Come Under My Dominion,” directed by Ali Peskezi, where he played a significant role in the 16mm film’s production. These early projects demonstrated his multifaceted talents in directing, acting, and screenwriting.
Rise to Stardom
Dariush Arjomand made his cinematic breakthrough in 1986 when he starred in “Captain of the Sun,” directed by Naser Taghvaei. His performance earned him the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor at the Fifth Fajr Film Festival. This award marked his official entry into the elite circle of Iranian actors.
