From the Safavid era through the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties and into the Islamic Republic, controlling Bandar Abbas has meant controlling a vital gateway for imports, exports, and naval operations.
During the Pahlavi period, modernization efforts further enhanced the city’s role. Under Mohammad Reza Shah, the development of infrastructure, shipbuilding, and port expansion turned Bandar Abbas into a focal point for national development. In contemporary Iran, its strategic importance has only increased, with the Iranian Navy and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy maintaining strong presences in the region, particularly as regional tensions with Gulf neighbors and Western powers have intensified.
Economic Powerhouse
Ports and Trade
The modern economic life of Bandar Abbas is centered around its ports. Shahid Rajaee Port, located within the city’s bounds, is Iran’s primary maritime cargo terminal. It handles more than 70% of Iran’s containerized imports and exports. In addition to this, Shahid Bahonar Port serves both commercial and passenger traffic and is equipped for multi-modal operations including bulk, general cargo, and Ro-Ro vessels.
