Taghi Salehnia, affectionately known as the “Father of the Sailor,” played a central role in the establishment and growth of the Malavan Bandar Anzali Football Club. A passionate figure in Iranian football, Salehnia was not only a player for Malavan but also served as the team’s head coach from 1973 to 1998. His long and dedicated service earned him deep respect among fans and players alike, solidifying his legendary status in Bandar Anzali and beyond.
Beyond his contributions to Malavan, Salehnia also coached the Esteghlal Municipality team of Bandar Anzali, demonstrating his commitment to local football development. His influence extended to the national level as well, where he served as an assistant to Frank O’Farrell, the former head coach of Iran’s national football team.
Under Salehnia’s leadership, Malavan achieved notable successes, including a memorable 4–1 victory over Tractor Sazi Tabriz in the first round of the National Cup. He also guided Malavan to several other major accomplishments: defeating Esteghlal in the finals to claim the National Cup during the 1960s, and securing victories in the 1955, 1965, and 1969 editions of the tournament. Additionally, his team finished as runner-up in 1966, 1967, and 1970.
Salehnia’s legacy is deeply rooted in the football culture of Bandar Anzali. His commitment to developing local talent, building a competitive team, and fostering a strong footballing identity left a lasting impact on Iranian football. His nickname, “Father of the Sailor,” reflects both his nurturing role in the club and his guiding presence in the lives of countless young footballers who passed through Malavan’s ranks.
