Hengameh Ghaziani meets with families of those killed in protests

Rise to Prominence in Iranian Cinema

Hengameh Ghaziani’s artistic breakthrough came with the 2007 film As Simple as That, directed by Reza Mirkarimi. In this film, she portrayed a modest housewife from a rural background grappling with the challenges of adjusting to the fast-paced, often alienating life of urban Tehran. Her subtle, emotionally rich performance earned her critical acclaim and won her the prestigious Crystal Simorgh Award for Best Actress at the 26th Fajr Film Festival. This role resonated with Iranian audiences, especially women, who saw in her character the tensions of tradition versus modernity, and the silent resilience of many Iranian women navigating societal change.

Ghaziani’s ability to convey emotional depth and moral ambiguity was further demonstrated in her performances in 2011. That year, she appeared in Migraine, directed by Manali Shojaei Fard, and Days of Life, directed by Parviz Sheikh Tadi. In Days of Life, she again won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actress at the 30th Fajr Film Festival. Her role as a woman enduring personal loss and emotional turmoil amidst the backdrop of war and national unrest underscored her capacity for portraying deeply human stories in a cinematic language accessible to a wide range of viewers.

A Multitalented Artist: Translator and Singer

Ghaziani’s artistic reach extended beyond acting. Demonstrating her intellectual versatility, she translated the historical book The Land of the Red Man, The Law of the White Man by American historian Wilcomb Washburn. The book, which explores the history of Native Americans and U.S. colonial policies, reflects Ghaziani’s interest in themes of marginalization, justice, and resistance—issues that also informed her public persona.

In 2015, Ghaziani showcased yet another dimension of her talent by performing a women-only music concert at Vahdat Hall. Accompanied by music arranged by the celebrated composer Reza Tajbakhsh, her performance was a landmark event that challenged cultural taboos surrounding women’s musical performances in public settings in Iran. Though the concert was permitted under restrictions that limited the audience to women, it was a bold artistic statement about the rights of women to artistic expression.

Recognition Beyond Borders

Hengameh Ghaziani’s contributions to cinema and culture were not confined to the borders of Iran. Her international engagements included participating as a jury member at the Varna International Film Festival in Bulgaria. This role highlighted her stature as a respected figure in the global artistic community and reflected her ability to serve as a cultural ambassador for Iranian cinema on the world stage.
