Architecture and Design: A Soviet-Dubai Hybrid?

Early images and videos of the Wonsan Kalma Beach Resort reveal a curious blend of modernist architecture, bright pastel facades, and sweeping beach promenades. Some observers have likened it to a Soviet-era seaside resort, while others see the influence of Middle Eastern luxury developments, albeit on a far more modest scale.

The resort’s layout includes:

  • Multiple high-rise hotels with sea views

  • A sprawling beachfront with landscaped walkways

  • Shopping malls featuring state-produced goods

  • Entertainment complexes, including a water park and theaters

Critics argue that while the facilities may look impressive in state media footage, they are likely to suffer from the same issues that plague other large-scale North Korean developments: lack of maintenance, power shortages, and limited access to supplies. The real test will come once the resort is operational on a large scale, requiring staffing, logistics, and ongoing services that the North Korean economy may struggle to support.
