Photos of the largest fire incident in Tehran’s history

Families living nearby were evacuated, many of them leaving behind homes they would never see again. The fire consumed not only commercial properties but also several residential structures adjacent to the warehouses. The flames showed no discrimination between business and home, rich or poor. In total, dozens of warehouses and several caravanserais were reduced to ashes.

As the fire was finally brought under control in the early morning hours of July 9, attention turned to assessing the damage and ensuring the fire would not reignite. The precautionary phase began immediately, with smoldering embers being extinguished, rubble being cleared, and structures being evaluated for stability. Firefighters remained on-site for days, dousing hotspots and monitoring the area.

The estimated financial loss was staggering. At the time, it was believed that the damage amounted to over 20 million tomans, a figure that could rise as high as 30 million tomans. This was a colossal sum in 1955 and represented not just a blow to Tehran’s economy but also a significant setback for the national economy. The loss of grain, tobacco, and cotton reserves placed additional stress on supply chains and disrupted the livelihoods of countless individuals.
