Retinol and Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Double Damage to Sensitive Skin
Retinol and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are two of the most effective ingredients for promoting skin renewal, reducing blemishes, and fading dark spots caused by acne. Retinol increases cell turnover and unclogs pores, while AHAs exfoliate the skin’s surface by removing dead skin cells. However, when used together—especially on sensitive skin—the combination can do more harm than good.
Both ingredients have strong exfoliating effects, which can strip the skin’s natural protective barrier if used at the same time. This often results in excessive dryness, redness, irritation, and in some cases, peeling or inflammation. Sensitive skin types are particularly vulnerable to this kind of damage, as their skin barrier is already more reactive.
To safely enjoy the benefits of both, it’s important to use them at different times. For example, AHAs can be used a few times a week in the evening, while retinol can be used on alternate nights. This spaced-out approach allows the skin to rest and recover, minimizing irritation while still targeting acne-related pigmentation and texture issues. Always pair these active ingredients with a gentle moisturizer and sunscreen to protect and maintain the health of your skin.
