Pictures of the Diego Garcia military base

The role of Diego Garcia in the U.S. military’s global operations has remained largely shrouded in secrecy. Few Americans are even aware of the base’s existence, and even fewer know of the brutal history that led to its creation. The base has been described as the “Footprint of Freedom,” but for the Chagossians, it is a symbol of loss, injustice, and betrayal.

In recent years, however, the Chagossian community has begun to push for justice. Their movement for the right to return to their homeland has gained momentum, and international attention has been focused on the plight of the Chagossians. In 2000, a British court ruled that the Chagossians should be allowed to return to Diego Garcia, but the British government ignored the ruling. In 2016, the United Nations voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution calling for the Chagossians’ right to return to their islands, but Britain refused to comply. Despite this, the Chagossian diaspora continues to fight for recognition of their rights and for the opportunity to return to their homeland.
