Hassan II died in 1999 and was succeeded by his son, Mohammed VI, who initiated further reforms and attempted to address some of the human rights issues inherited from his father’s era. In addition to his political and strategic leadership, Hassan II of Morocco placed strong emphasis on Morocco’s cultural and religious identity.

As king, he held the title of “Commander of the Faithful,” which gave him not only political authority but also religious legitimacy. This role allowed him to position himself as a unifying figure in a country with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, including Arab and Berber communities.
