Early Life and Family Background of Abdollah Movahed
Abdollah Movahed Ardabili was born on March 20, 1940, into a family with strong educational and cultural values. His father, Mojtaba Movahed Ardabili, was a teacher who moved from Ardabil to Babolsar during the reign of Reza Shah. The family originally carried the surname Fazlizadeh, but later changed it to Movahed Ardabili. His father married a woman from Bandar-e Anzali, and together they built a large family with six sons and three daughters.
Life was not easy for the Movahed family. Abdollah’s father died in 1944, leaving the older brothers responsible for supporting the family and caring for young Abdollah. Despite financial and emotional hardships, the family remained united and focused on education, discipline, and personal growth. These values later became an important part of Abdullah Movahed’s personality both inside and outside the wrestling arena.
Growing up in Babolsar, Abdollah developed an interest in sports at an early age. Unlike many athletes who focus on one discipline from childhood, Movahed explored several sports before finding his true passion. He trained in gymnastics, swimming, and volleyball, all of which contributed to his agility, flexibility, balance, and physical conditioning. These athletic foundations later became major strengths in his wrestling career.
Around 1957, the family moved to Tehran, a turning point that changed the course of Abdollah Movahed’s life forever. Tehran offered better opportunities for sports training, national competitions, and professional coaching. Initially, he continued playing volleyball and also took up weightlifting. However, after suffering from hepatitis, he temporarily stepped away from heavy physical activity.
Once he recovered, his brother Mehdi encouraged him to pursue wrestling. That advice changed sports history forever. Abdollah entered wrestling training with dedication and quickly impressed coaches with his natural technique, intelligence, and determination.
