In Abadan, Alec encounters Konstantin, a KGB agent who has been sent to Iran to investigate the missing missile. Konstantin is following his own leads and initially has little reason to trust an American intelligence officer. The two men come from opposing sides of the Cold War, and their governments are political rivals. Under normal circumstances, an American agent and a Soviet intelligence officer would have every reason to conceal information from one another.
However, the circumstances surrounding the stolen missile force them to reconsider their positions.
Alec and Konstantin gradually realize that they are investigating the same conspiracy. The murder of the American consul, the activities of the international terrorist organization, and the disappearance of the Soviet missile are all connected. The Baron’s organization has stolen the weapon and transported it into the region as part of its plan to destroy the peace conference.
The discovery creates an unusual situation. Alec and Konstantin may represent rival superpowers, but both men now have a common objective: finding the missile before it can be used.
