Foreign tourists with their vehicles in Homeland

In the middle of the 1970s, Iran was experiencing a period of profound economic, social, and cultural transformation. The country was rapidly urbanizing, investing heavily in infrastructure, expanding its international connections, and presenting itself to the outside world as a modernizing nation with a rich and ancient cultural heritage. One of the clearest reflections of this transformation can be found in the development of international tourism.

A report published by the Ettela’at newspaper on Tir 9, 1354, corresponding to June 30, 1975, offers a fascinating glimpse into the scale and character of foreign tourism in Iran half a century ago. According to the report, the Ministry of Information and Tourism had compiled statistics concerning foreign visitors to Iran during the year 1353, corresponding approximately to 1974–75 in the Gregorian calendar. The figures showed that 412,702 foreign tourists had entered Iran during the year to visit the country’s tourist attractions.

The number represented a substantial increase over the approximately 360,000 foreign tourists recorded in 1352. In percentage terms, the newspaper described the growth as approximately 16 percent. At the same time, revenue generated by foreign tourists increased by approximately 17.1 percent. The report stated that foreign currency earnings associated with these visitors amounted to 470 million tomans.
