Colonel Sanders’ trip to Capital for the opening of the first KFC branch.

If the June 1978 opening date is correct, the restaurant had survived for approximately eight months.

Eight months.

For a global fast-food chain, that is an extraordinarily short lifespan.

But the short existence of the restaurant reflected the extraordinary speed of political change in Iran.

In less than a year, the environment that had allowed the restaurant to open had essentially disappeared.

From KFC to Kabooki

This is where the story takes an unusual turn.

According to accounts of the restaurant’s history, its manager, Cyrus Yousefi, did not simply abandon the location after the KFC name disappeared.

Instead, the restaurant was reportedly rebranded as “Kabooki.”

The name is significant because it represents an attempt to preserve a restaurant business while removing its direct association with an American corporate identity.

Rather than remaining KFC, the establishment could operate under a new name adapted to the Iranian environment.
