Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s personal life was deeply influenced by his family relationships. He also maintained respect for his father, Reza Shah, whose authority and personality left a lasting impression on him. Mohammad Reza frequently referred to his father’s influence in his writings. His mother, Taj-ol-Muluk, held a special place in his life, and he reportedly made every effort to treat her with respect. He belonged to a large royal family with several brothers and sisters, though only some of them shared the same mother. His own children included Shahnaz, from his first marriage, and Reza, Farahnaz, Ali Reza, and Leila, from his marriage to Farah. Reza became crown prince, while Ali Reza and Leila died many years after the monarchy had ended.
His first marriage was to Princess Fawzia of Egypt. Although the marriage strengthened ties between the Iranian and Egyptian royal families, the account suggests that it was arranged primarily for political and dynastic reasons rather than personal affection. Fawzia is portrayed as reserved and emotionally distant, and Mohammad Reza is described as having accepted the marriage largely because of his father’s wishes. After Reza Shah’s exile and Mohammad Reza’s accession to the throne, he was no longer under the same pressure to maintain the marriage. When Fawzia returned to Egypt, he reportedly made repeated attempts to persuade her to return, sending letters and diplomatic representatives, but these efforts failed. The marriage ultimately ended in divorce.
