The shah, 60 years old when he died, was put in marble-walled tomb by six white-gloved Egyptian sailors in the 19th-century Rifai Mosque under the shadow of Cairo’s Citadel, a hillside fortress built by Saladin after his victory over the crusaders. It was the same spot where the shah’s father, Shah Reza, was buried temporarily during World War II before being repatriated to homeland.
