Carlos Queiroz’s island in Mozambique

Despite its tourism assets and its nearness to South Africa, one of the world’s top tourist destinations, Mozambique has the lowest tourist numbers of all its neighbours except Malawi. Queiroz is part of or backing a sustainable eco-tourism development on (probably) Vamizi Island, aligned with conservation aims and the Biosphere Reserve plan. His involvement could also be tied to mining or timber exploitation via Niassalândia, which could raise ethical and environmental concerns.

The most likely model could be mixed: tourism + light resource exploitation, potentially balanced with preservation. Beyond profit, this could be a legacy project, both personal (his birthplace) and symbolic (investing in Mozambican natural heritage). Parts of Cabo Delgado Province, which includes the Quirimbas Archipelago, have experienced security problems. For investors, this geopolitical risk could complicate long-term tourism or conservation investments. Other sources, including BigSlam, refer to Vamizi Island, praising it as “the island of dreams” for nature, remote luxury, and sustainable tourism.
