Carlos Queiroz’s island in Mozambique

Other major industries in Vamizi included the production or collection of indigo, timber, ivory, manna gum and turtle shells. The Quirimbas National Park is under pressure: there are reports of illegal logging, weak enforcement, and governance issues. According to whistleblowers, timber exploitation is ongoing in Quirimbas, with corruption and connections to powerful business interests.

Given the establishment of a protected environmental area (Palma-Quirimbas), any exploitation or development may require special licenses. Ecotourism and conservation plans are part of the long-term “business and management” plan of the Quirimbas Biosphere Reserve.  Because the island name (“Vazimi”) is not clearly corroborated in environmental, tourism, or mapping sources, it’s unclear whether the reports about Queiroz refer to a fully private island, or a joint development project, or something more speculative.
