Soraya Tarzi was born on November 24, 1899, in Damascus, Syria, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. She was the daughter of the Afghan political figure Sardar Mahmud Beg Tarzi, and granddaughter of Sardar Ghulam Muhammad Tarzi.
