After a Kensington Palace memorial to Princess Diana was announced in 2018 (an original statue of the late-princess is slated to be unveiled on July 1 of this year), Harrods took down the statue and returned it to the Fayed family. The statue is currently under the care of Dodi’s father, Mohamed, who is still alive and in his 90s—more than 30 years after the tragic loss of his son.
The night of August 31, 1997, remains one of the most scrutinized events in modern history. Diana and Dodi left the Ritz Hotel in Paris, reportedly attempting to evade photographers who were pursuing them. Their driver, Henri Paul, lost control of the car in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. The crash killed Dodi, Diana, and Henri instantly. Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived but sustained serious injuries. The incident triggered an outpouring of grief worldwide, with memorials and floral tributes appearing outside Buckingham Palace and around the world.
