From the end of 1361 to the beginning of 1362, the Tudeh Party of Iran, as the only remaining political party in the country, was accused by the authorities of attempting a “coup” and then of “espionage for the benefit of the Soviet Union”, During two raids, members of the leadership and many cadres of the Tudeh Party were arrested and interrogated on the charge of “coup”.

More than 1000 members and many leaders of this party, as well as about 200 military personnel (from the army, police, and gendarmerie) were accused of being members of the network. Undercover officers, affiliated with the Tudeh Party, were arrested and tried. Afzali was also arrested on charges of being a member of the secret military network of the Tudeh Party of Iran and was shot along with 9 other high-ranking army officers in 1362.
