More than 1000 members and many leaders of this party, as well as about 200 military personnel (from the army, police, and gendarmerie) were accused of being members of the network. Undercover officers, affiliated with the Tudeh Party, were arrested and tried. Afzali was also arrested on charges of being a member of the secret military network of the Tudeh Party of Iran and was shot along with 9 other high-ranking army officers in 1362.
Hadi Ghaffari later said in his memoirs: The report that Bahram Afzali was a mob had taken him to Ruhollah Khomeini, and the end of that report was his execution. In a letter he wrote to Ali Khamenei many years later, Nuruddin Kyanuri reported on the torture of himself, his wife, and daughter, as well as the torture of other arrested persons, in order to obtain confessions.
