Shiite cleric in Homeland takes in street dogs and nurses them back to health

In some parts of the Muslim world, dogs are considered unclean, driven away with shouting, sticks and stones, and sometimes even shot by city workers in failed attempts to control the feral population. But that hasn’t stopped Tabatabaei from opening a shelter in the city of Qom — home to several major religious schools and shrines — where he takes in street dogs and strays and nurses them back to health.

Animals are part of our shared world. When we protect them, we also protect compassion, kindness, and the balance of nature. Neglect and abuse don’t just harm animals—they affect our communities, our children, and the values we pass on. By supporting rescue efforts, you’re not only saving lives but also nurturing a more humane society. Beyond food and shelter, we provide emotional healing, training, and socialization.
