One of Amir-Abdollahian’s most significant achievements was his role in the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Since 2021, Iraq had hosted several rounds of direct talks between the two countries, which had cut diplomatic ties in 2016. These efforts culminated in a historic meeting in Amman, Jordan, in December 2022, where both Amir-Abdollahian and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud expressed their willingness to engage in more dialogue. In January 2023, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud reiterated at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Riyadh was committed to finding a dialogue with Iran. This commitment to diplomacy bore fruit on March 10, 2023, when Iran and Saudi Arabia announced the resumption of relations following a deal brokered by China.
