The death of Lt. Gen. Mehrmand, the last tactical commander of the Imperial Air Force

The Shah’s government heavily invested in military modernization during the 1960s and 1970s, purchasing advanced aircraft, weapons, and technology from Western powers. Mehrmand was instrumental in overseeing the integration of these technologies into the Iranian military infrastructure. His efforts ensured that the Imperial Air Force remained one of the most advanced in the Middle East, with cutting-edge fighter jets, bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft that could respond swiftly to any threat.

The Islamic Revolution and Exile

The 1979 Islamic Revolution dramatically altered the political and military landscape of Iran. The revolution, led by Ayatollah Khomeini, resulted in the overthrow of the Shah and the establishment of the Islamic Republic. The military, which had been a strong pillar of the Shah’s regime, found itself divided and weakened during the tumultuous period. Many senior officers, including Lieutenant General Mehrmand, were targeted by the new regime, as they were seen as loyalists to the deposed monarch.
