Death and Legacy

On November 12, 2011, Hassan Tehrani Moghadam was killed in a massive explosion at the Modarres barracks, an ammunition depot west of Tehran. The explosion also killed at least 16 other members of the IRGC. The official narrative described the incident as an accident that occurred during the transportation of munitions. However, speculation has persisted that it may have been the result of sabotage, possibly by Israeli intelligence agencies, given Moghadam’s central role in Iran’s missile program.

His death was a significant blow to Iran’s military establishment. He was mourned as a national hero, and his funeral was attended by top IRGC officials and political leaders. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei personally acknowledged Moghadam’s contributions, emphasizing his irreplaceable role in advancing Iran’s defense capabilities.

In the years following his death, Iran has continued to develop its missile program, often invoking Moghadam’s name and legacy. He is remembered not just as a military engineer but as a visionary who foresaw the role missile power would play in modern warfare. Numerous missile production facilities and R&D centers have been named after him, and his life is often cited in Iranian media as a symbol of dedication, ingenuity, and resistance against foreign pressure.
