The first nationwide celebration of Iranian culture and art

During the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, Iran experienced a remarkable period of cultural development characterized by significant investments in the arts, heritage preservation, and international cultural exchange. Among the most influential cultural initiatives of this era were the Culture and Arts Festival, held annually across the country from 1968 until the Islamic Revolution, and the internationally acclaimed Shiraz Art Festival, organized from 1967 to 1977. Although these two festivals differed in their scope, objectives, and audiences, they shared a common commitment to celebrating artistic creativity and highlighting the richness of Iranian culture.

The Culture and Arts Festival primarily focused on preserving and promoting Iran’s indigenous traditions, regional music, theater, handicrafts, poetry, and visual arts. It sought to strengthen national identity by bringing together artists and cultural groups from every province of the country. In contrast, the Shiraz Art Festival became internationally recognized for its innovative programming, presenting avant-garde theater, experimental music, traditional performances, dance, and interdisciplinary artistic collaborations that attracted leading artists from around the world. Together, these festivals reflected Iran’s efforts to balance the preservation of its cultural heritage with engagement in contemporary artistic movements.
