The Unfinished Bahram Bayzai Project
One of the most interesting episodes in Abdi’s career occurred in 1995 when acclaimed filmmaker Bahram Bayzai planned to produce the screenplay Who Killed the Boss? Abdi was invited to participate in an extended screen test for the leading role of a detective.
The project required him to perform an uninterrupted fifty-minute acting exercise before the camera. During the scene, the detective receives two letters—one informing him of his retirement and another assigning him to investigate a murder. The character must choose between ending his professional career or accepting one final investigation.
Bayzai reportedly filmed the complete performance without interruption, providing Abdi with an opportunity to demonstrate his concentration, emotional control, and dramatic ability. Although the project ultimately never entered full production and the recorded footage was never publicly released, the experience remains an interesting chapter in Abdi’s artistic career. It illustrated the confidence that one of Iran’s greatest directors placed in his abilities and showed that Abdi’s talents extended well beyond comedy.
