The early years following the opening of Mehrabad Airport

By 1938, the site had developed into an established aviation location, supported by a fleet of approximately twenty aircraft. Although its facilities were limited compared with those of modern airports, the establishment of the airport created a foundation for the growth of aviation in Iran.

At that time, air transportation was still developing, and relatively few people had access to commercial flights. Nevertheless, aircraft offered important advantages for communication and travel, especially when connecting distant locations.

The airport’s location in western Tehran was particularly valuable because it provided access to the capital while offering space for aviation activities. As Tehran expanded, Mehrabad gradually became integrated into the city’s transportation network.

The establishment of the airport represented an important step in Iran’s modernization. It provided a permanent location for flight operations and created opportunities for the expansion of passenger and cargo services in subsequent decades.

Military Aviation and Postwar Expansion

After the Second World War, Mehrabad Airport developed into a major Air Force base. Military aviation became an important part of its operations, contributing to the development of infrastructure, technical facilities, and professional aviation training.

In 1946, the first group of Iranian Air Force pilots was sent to the United States for training. This initiative reflected efforts to improve the skills of Iranian pilots and strengthen the country’s military aviation capabilities.
