The Shah’s Trip to the Soviet Union

Living abroad also influenced his belief that Iran needed modernization to achieve international respect and economic prosperity.

After returning to Iran in 1936, Mohammad Reza continued his education at the country’s military academy. He studied military strategy, administration, and leadership before graduating in 1938.

His military education reflected his father’s belief that a powerful national army was essential for maintaining Iran’s independence and political stability.

Throughout his life, Mohammad Reza maintained a strong interest in aviation and military technology. He believed that a modern military establishment was necessary to protect Iran’s territorial integrity and regional influence.

Accession to the Throne in 1941

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi became Shah of Iran during the Second World War.

In August 1941, British and Soviet forces invaded Iran because of concerns about German influence and the strategic importance of Iranian transportation routes and oil resources.

The invasion placed enormous pressure on Reza Shah, who was forced to abdicate in September 1941.

On 16 September 1941, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi ascended the throne at the age of twenty-one.

Unlike his father, who had exercised extensive personal authority, the young Shah initially faced significant limitations on his political power.

Iran’s parliament, political parties, foreign governments, and influential religious figures all played important roles in national affairs.

The presence of Allied troops further complicated the political situation.

During the early years of his reign, Mohammad Reza attempted to strengthen the monarchy while navigating political instability and foreign interference.

Following the war, Iran experienced disputes involving Soviet influence in its northern provinces. The withdrawal of Soviet forces in 1946 became an important moment in the country’s struggle to maintain sovereignty.

These experiences reinforced the Shah’s determination to build a strong central government capable of resisting foreign pressure.
