Reza Shah welcoming his Crown Prince upon his return from Europe

successor. At a time when Reza Shah was attempting to consolidate his authority and establish a stable political system, preparing his son to inherit the throne became an important priority.

As Crown Prince, Mohammad Reza was expected to receive an education appropriate for a future monarch. His upbringing was therefore organized according to the requirements of royal life and the political expectations of his father. He was moved to a private palace within the Golestan Palace complex, a historically significant royal residence dating from the Qajar period. This location provided him with a controlled environment in which he could begin his formal education under the supervision of selected teachers and royal officials.

The decision to educate Mohammad Reza within the Golestan complex also reflected the historical continuity of the Iranian monarchy. Although Reza Shah had established a new dynasty and attempted to distance his government from the political traditions of the Qajar period, the royal family continued to occupy spaces associated with Iran’s earlier monarchical institutions. The Golestan complex therefore represented both the historical traditions of the Iranian monarchy and the emergence of a new political order under the Pahlavis.

One of the most important elements of Mohammad Reza’s early education was his attendance at a military school alongside approximately twenty carefully selected classmates. Reza Shah wanted his son to receive an education that would emphasize discipline, equality, physical development, and military values. Rather than allowing the Crown Prince to grow up entirely isolated from other students, he attempted to place him in an educational environment where he would interact with boys of similar ages.
