Reza Shah welcoming his Crown Prince upon his return from Europe

An important turning point in Mohammad Reza’s education occurred in September 1931, when he was sent to Switzerland to continue his studies. On September 6, 1931, corresponding to Shahrivar 15, 1310, according to the Iranian calendar, the young Crown Prince departed Iran for Europe.

The decision to send Mohammad Reza abroad was carefully considered. Reza Shah wanted his son to receive a modern education that would expose him to European academic traditions, international perspectives, and different approaches to social and political organization. Switzerland was selected because it offered an appropriate educational environment while maintaining political neutrality during a period of considerable instability in Europe.

The early 1930s were characterized by economic difficulties, political tensions, and the growing influence of authoritarian movements across several European countries. Switzerland, however, maintained a policy of neutrality and offered a relatively stable environment for international students. Its educational institutions were also well regarded, making the country an attractive destination for families seeking a European education.

For Reza Shah, sending his son to Switzerland was not simply a personal or educational decision. It was also part of a broader effort to expose the future ruler of Iran to European methods of education and administration. The Crown Prince would have the opportunity to study in an international environment, learn foreign languages, and become familiar with educational practices that differed from those available in Iran.
