Hoveida’s behind-the-scenes visit to the movie Heroes

Heroes is a 1970 crime thriller that stands as an intriguing collaboration between Iranian and international cinema. Directed by the veteran filmmaker Jean Negulescu and penned by Chester Erskine, the film is a fascinating blend of Western heist tropes and Iranian cultural elements. Set amidst the harsh deserts and volatile political backdrop of 1970s Iran, the film tells the story of a botched heist, survival in the wilderness, and the chaos of loyalty, greed, and fate. With an ensemble cast including Hollywood and Iranian stars, Heroes is a thrilling but often overlooked entry in the genre.

A High-Stakes Heist Gone Wrong

The movie opens with an ambitious heist attempt. A team of international thieves sets their sights on stealing Iran’s royal jewels in Tehran, a daring and seemingly foolproof plan that goes horribly wrong. The initial tension builds quickly as the crew’s operation is foiled, leading to a chaotic escape. The American Tex (played by Stuart Whitman) and the Englishman Ronnie (Ian Ogilvy) are the only two who manage to flee successfully. Their survival introduces a sense of urgency and suspense as they try to evade capture and regroup with their remaining allies.
