History

For those interested in historical photographs of the Middle East, the following list provides a selection of institutions and organizations with significant collections. This list was prepared for the session “Documenting the Middle East: A Look at Photograph Collections in the United States” presented at the Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting, New Orleans, Louisiana, August 20, 2005.

Aram (born 1953) is a film actress. she began her career in Iran starring in the film Gorg-e bizar and went on to star in the film Aghaye jahel.Her breakthrough role was in the 1978 film Hokm-e tir as Behjat.

Harrison Forman (1904-1978) was an American photographer and journalist. He wrote for The New York Times and National Geographic. During World War II he reported from China and interviewed Mao Zedong.He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Oriental Philosophy. During the 1970s, Googoosh began a meteoric rise to fame and success as she drove the edge of Iranian pop music further and further. Known for her flamboyant outfits and fashion sense, Googoosh wowed her pop-culture-hungry fans in Iran and abroad with her trademark hairdos and hip-elegant style, inspiring many Iranian women to copy her hairdos.

Gholām-Hossein Sā’edi (1936 – 1985) was a prolific writer. He published over forty books, representing his talents in the fiction genres of drama (under the pen name Gohar Morad or Gowhar Murad, according to Library of Congress arabicised transliteration), the novel, the screenplay, and the short story in addition to the non-fiction genres of cultural criticism, travel literature and ethnography.

The Paykan is the first Iranian made car produced by Iran Khodro between 1967 and 2005. The car was very popular in Iran from its introduction until its discontinuation. It is often colloquially referred as the Iranian chariot.

Seyyed Reza Firoozabadi (1254 – 1344) was a politician, cleric and philanthropist, a four-term member of the National Assembly and the founder of Firoozabadi Hospital in Rey.

A hairdresser is a person whose occupation is to cut or style hair in order to change or maintain a person’s image. This is achieved using a combination of hair coloring, haircutting, and hair texturing techniques. Most hairdressers are professionally licensed as either a hairdresser, a barber or a cosmetologist.

What a party! For three nights in a row, dancers, performers, half-naked figures in shaggy red costumes and fantastic creatures shackled to one another writhed through the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMoCA) while scantily clad men danced in front of a painting by Picasso.

Soleyman Vaseghi (Soley) was born in Tehran in 1946. His love of music and extraordinary voice were remarkable even from his early years. At the age of 20 his performing career began, practicing a wide variety of vocal styles.
