Khamenei officially succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini after Khomeini’s death, being elected as the new Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts on 4 June 1989.Initially, the idea of leadership council was proposed by some members of Assembly of Experts. Various lists were proposed and Khamenei was named in all of them.
