The “Queen of Garbage” is on trial in Sweden’s biggest environmental case

Sweden’s largest environmental scandal has taken center stage with the trial of Bella Nilsson, former CEO of waste management company NMT Think Pink. This high-profile case, described as the country’s biggest environmental crime, has captivated the public and raised critical questions about the environmental practices and regulations in Sweden. With a police investigation spanning over 45,000 pages and 150 witnesses expected to testify, the trial is uncovering the systematic and illegal disposal of toxic waste across 21 sites in 15 municipalities. The case is already shaping up to have a far-reaching impact, both legally and environmentally.

The waste-dumping scandal involves hazardous chemicals, extensive environmental damage, and fires that burned for months, threatening nature reserves. Prosecutors, including Linda Schön, have built a compelling case that highlights the systematic nature of the crimes, involving millions of euros in damages for the municipalities affected by the illegal dumping. Bella Nilsson’s defense attorney, Jan Tibbling, has argued that Nilsson will explain everything, shedding light on how the sector operates, but the magnitude of the crimes suggests a deep-rooted issue in the waste management industry.
