Azar, a young woman of humble origins, works in the home of Behrouz, a wealthy young man from an aristocratic family. She has secretly loved him for years, nurturing an affection that she never dares to express. Behrouz, though kind and intellectual, suffers from a vision problem — a physical ailment that symbolizes his inability to “see” the love that has been in front of him all along.

When Behrouz leaves Tehran to study in Europe, Azar’s feelings remain unspoken. Years later, he returns with a foreign wife, a modern woman representing Western sophistication and the cultural influences shaping Iran’s upper classes during that period. Azar’s heart is broken. The man she loved is no longer emotionally or socially accessible to her, and his new marriage signals the end of her quiet dreams.

Overwhelmed by heartbreak and the painful realization that her love has no future, Azar decides to leave Tehran. The capital, once the setting of her hope, becomes a place of sorrow and lost illusions. She departs for Shiraz, seeking both physical and emotional healing. There, she undergoes treatment for her eyes — a metaphorical act that reflects her desire to see the world anew, to gain clarity and strength after years of emotional blindness.
