Kim and his family at the New Year’s celebration

A Message to North Korean Troops in Ukraine

One of the most internationally significant aspects of Kim Jong-un’s New Year activities was his message to North Korean troops reportedly fighting on Russia’s side in the war in Ukraine. According to KCNA, Kim praised these soldiers as the “greatest strength and pride and a strong pillar” of the country.

He expressed anticipation for their eventual return home, framing their deployment as a source of national honor. “Be brave. Behind you are Pyongyang and Moscow,” Kim said, according to the state news agency.

This message represents a striking acknowledgment of North Korea’s involvement in the conflict, even if details remain limited. By publicly linking Pyongyang and Moscow, Kim underscored the deepening strategic partnership between the two countries.

Strengthening Ties with Russia

North Korea’s alignment with Russia has become increasingly visible amid the Ukraine war. Western governments have accused Pyongyang of supplying Moscow with weapons and ammunition, allegations that both countries have denied or downplayed.

Kim’s New Year message, however, suggested a level of cooperation that goes beyond material support. By referring to North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces, the regime signaled a willingness to play a more active role in global geopolitical conflicts.

This alignment serves multiple purposes for Pyongyang. It strengthens ties with a major power willing to challenge U.S. influence, potentially opens avenues for economic or military assistance, and reinforces the narrative of North Korea as a committed member of an alternative international order.
