Sovereignty in this context does not necessarily mean isolation from allies. Britain can maintain alliances while establishing limits on military cooperation. The protesters argue that an independent foreign policy requires the ability to say no when an ally’s actions conflict with Britain’s principles or interests.
Supporters of the existing US-UK military relationship, however, may take a different view. They could argue that military cooperation provides important strategic advantages and that shared facilities and intelligence arrangements strengthen collective defense. They may also contend that restricting US military activities from British bases could weaken the alliance and reduce Britain’s influence over American decision-making.
This disagreement demonstrates why the issue is politically complex. The question is not simply whether Britain supports or opposes the United States. It concerns the balance between alliance commitments, national sovereignty, international law, security interests, humanitarian concerns, and public opinion.
For the protesters, however, the immediate priority is preventing Britain from becoming directly or indirectly involved in attacks on Iran. They argue that Britain should not provide logistical support, military infrastructure, or other assistance that could facilitate offensive operations. Their position is based on the belief that involvement in war carries moral and political responsibilities even when British forces are not themselves carrying out every attack.
