Ghafour Jeddi Ardabili (1945–1980) was an Iranian McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter pilot in the Air Force of Iran. He played a significant role in the early months of the Iran–Iraq War by halting the advancement of Iraqi tanks into western Iran. A statue in his honor is placed in Tehran and in his hometown of Ardabil.
Early Life and Military Training
Born in 1945 in Ardabil, Iran, Ghafour Jeddi pursued his passion for aviation by enrolling in Iran’s Air Force University after completing his schooling. In 1969, he was sent to the United States for advanced training, where he honed his skills as a fighter pilot.
Service in the Iranian Air Force
Upon returning to Iran, Jeddi quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional flying abilities. He became proficient in piloting the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and was known for his precision and composure under pressure. His dedication to duty and skill in the cockpit earned him the respect of his peers and superiors alike.
