According to this source, the Commission’s officer-in-charge stated that the number of registered Iraqi POWs in Iran was 1,722 (ibid.). In 1990, according to two sources, 37,934 Iraqi POWs were exchanged for 37,532 Iranian POWs, and from 1990 to 1994, another 7,000 Iraqi POWs were released (Xinhua 17 Aug. 1995; UPI 17 Aug. 1995). Iraq claims, however, that Iran still holds another 5,000 Iraqi POWs (Xinhua 17 Aug. 1995).
