The official City of Tehran website says that “capital” comes from the Persian words “Tah” meaning “end”, or “bottom”, and “Ran” meaning “[mountain] slope”—literally, the bottom of the mountain. Given capital’s position at the foot of the Alborz mountains, this seems plausible. Archaeological remains from the ancient city of Ray suggest that settlement in Tehran dates back over 8,000 years.
