A society cannot build a sustainable future when a significant proportion of its population is systematically excluded from education, employment, public life and decision-making.
France therefore continues to call on the Taliban to honour their obligations and to respond to the concerns repeatedly expressed by the United Nations and its member states. This call is not directed against the Afghan people. On the contrary, it reflects France’s commitment to the Afghan population and its desire to see Afghans live in a country where their basic rights are respected and where they can contribute fully to the reconstruction and development of their society.
Among the most serious aspects of the current situation is the systematic discrimination suffered by Afghan women and girls. France reiterates its strongest condemnation of the policies that have progressively excluded women and girls from almost every sphere of public and private life. Since the Taliban returned to power, Afghan women and girls have faced increasingly severe restrictions on their education, employment, freedom of movement, access to public spaces and participation in society. These measures represent a deliberate assault on fundamental rights and threaten to deprive half of Afghanistan’s population of the opportunity to participate in the country’s future.
