Fundamental human rights belong to every individual, regardless of gender, nationality, religion or social status. The right to education, the right to work, the right to participate in society and the right to access healthcare are essential elements of human dignity. Denying these rights on the basis of gender is incompatible with the principles of equality and non-discrimination that underpin the international human rights system.
The ban imposed in December 2024 preventing Afghan women from entering medical education institutions represents an especially alarming development. The consequences of this decision extend far beyond the students directly affected. Preventing women from studying medicine threatens the future of Afghanistan’s healthcare system and can have immediate consequences for Afghan women and children who depend on female healthcare professionals. In a society where cultural and social considerations can make access to male medical professionals difficult or impossible for many women, the continued education of female doctors, nurses, midwives and other health workers is essential.
